Jim Hartung
A Legendary Gymnast and Mentor
Jim Hartung was one of the most accomplished gymnasts in American history and a true icon of the University of Nebraska. As a student-athlete, Jim helped lead Nebraska men’s gymnastics to four consecutive NCAA National Championships and earned seven individual NCAA titles, including two All-Around National Championships. He was a 22-time All-American and received the Nissen-Emery Award, the highest honor in collegiate men’s gymnastics.
On the international stage, Jim represented the United States as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Men’s Gymnastics Team, which captured the first and only Olympic gold medal in U.S. men’s gymnastics history. His excellence and contributions to the sport earned him induction into multiple Halls of Fame, including the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, and the College Gymnastics Association Hall of Fame.
After his competitive career, Jim returned to Nebraska as a coach, where he spent years mentoring and developing student-athletes. More than his accolades, Jim will be remembered for the impact he had on those he coached — his leadership, humility, and dedication to helping others reach their full potential.
His legacy lives on through the countless athletes and lives he touched.
