Sam Phillips

Sam Phillips, a Division I Men’s Gymnast at the University of Illinois. 6× NCAA All-American, a 2024 Nissen-Emery Award finalist, a Big Ten bronze medalist, and was honored as the 2024 Male Student-Athlete of the Year at the NIL Summit Awards.

“In 2022, I attended the inaugural Athlete Ally summit in Miami, Florida. As the only out male athlete at Nebraska- and 1 of a couple in Men’s Gymnastics at the time- I had never been around so many queer athletes across all sports at once. I felt filled with community, joy and a sense of action to carry that community and commitment to activism back to Nebraska. This catapulted me and a few other athletes at Nebraska to start the Husker Athlete Ally Chapter; the first LGBTQ+ centered affinity group at the school.

Since then Athlete Ally has given me the education, community, resources and means to use my voice for advocacy and change both within and outside of NCAA athletics. Speaking at the conferences and providing my story of a lone out male athlete at Nebraska has touched the lives of so many and given me a community I never thought was possible… now I want to give back. Athlete Ally started a nil collective FOR student athletes, so your donation is going to helping other athletes like me across the country!
